On... film

Award season is in full swing with the biggest and baddest of them all the Oscars this Sunday. I have to admit that I have thoroughly enjoyed this year of film. I've watched just three of the best picture films Avatar, The Hurt Locker, and Inglorious Basterds, and each has added something new to American cinema.
Avatar- I was resistant to see this movie at first because I'm not a big fan of sci-fi. Although the acting doesn't shine, the movie is worth seeing just for the images. James Cameron takes you on a journey to the computer animated world of Pandora. The graphics are so real that you can almost feel and smell the lush forest. This is the future of movies, so we better get use to it.
Inglorious Basterds- drama. comedy. Tarantino. You can always tell when you're watching a Quentin Tarantino film because his films just embody what it is to be a bad guy. dirty and vulgar. The lead actors were all amazing. Christoph Waltz, who plays evil Nazi Col. Hans Landa, is now one of my favorite actors.
The Hurt Locker- the best film this year, even decade, in my opinion. Full of emotions and raw acting. I have no idea what is it really like as a soldier in Iraq. If it's at all like what was depicted in The Hurt Locker - and I read that it is - then I wish we can all be a little kinder to our soldiers. The film gives us a glimpse into the a range of the mental states of the soldiers. 3 lead characters, 3 different psyche. Sgt. William James is the badass. The war is his drug. He feels productive when he's defusing bombs (the most dangerous job in the world that I can think of). Spec. Owen Eldrige is pretty much the noob. He's young and can't come to grasp that he needs to kill others to protect himself. War is his nightmare. Sgt William James is somewhere in the middle. He knows the risks and performs the task by the books. War is his duty.
I hope I can watch a few more best picture films before the summer. On the top of my list are Up in the Air, An Education, and Up.

I stumbled upon this article recently: Oscar's 10 Most Powerful Female Roles
I couldn't agree more, so check it out.

Sunday night, I will be tuning in. Even if my favorate films don't win, at least I can comment on oscar fashion.
