No this has nothing to do with Jessica Simpson's new reality show. I'm talking about the monetary price of beauty. I read an article that claims that woman will spend an average of $13,000 on beauty products in her lifetime (normal women too, not botex-obsessed, plastic women). That's a nice chunk of change. Think how many pairs of shoes I could buy with that (which is a different topic altogether).
Normally, I don't put too much thought into my hair. I'm lucky to have pretty healthy and manageable hair. I shampoo with Head and Shoulders every morning and condition every other week. I brush through my hair to untangle and let it airdry. No biggie. Out the door in 5 minutes. That's okay for college life, but I'm moving up in the world. I figure my hair deserves some attention too. Over the weekend, I bought a John Freda Frizz Ease serum, Conair round hairbrush, and Conair hair dryer. Total cost: $50. You see, I wanted to be one of those people who always look like they just walked out of the hair salon, so I tried out my new products this morning.
9:00am- step out of the shower. hair wet and dripping.
9:05am- rub serum into my hair. The instructions said a dime size, but I used 2 dime-size glops for good measure.
9:07am- follow the "achieving volume" instructions. I'm still clumsy with the blow dryer, so I accidentally blew the instructions across the bathroom.
9:09am- blew contact case across the bathroom. not smooth.
9:18am- hair feels dry enough, but all the hair blowing made my hair tangle up. painfully untangling my hair.
9:20am- put in a clip. done. 20 minutes later, I do see a slight difference in my hair. It definitely feels smoother and healthier. I guess I'll have to add this to my morning routine and wake up earlier from now on.
Now to keep this up, I'll probably need to buy another bottle of hair product in 3 months. With my luck, I'll need another hair dryer in 1-2 years. And that's just for hair styling. There's make up for my eyes, cheeks, lips... lotion for every inch of my skin. Looks like I'm on my way to $13,000.
